I ordered my new iPhone, but NOT the new 3GS!
After “holding off” since the iPhone was introduced to the world a couple of years ago, I have finally ordered mine. However I didn’t order the new 3GS version, I decided to buy the older 3G, why?, here’s why:
- The Software. The new software update will be released on June 17th, the older 3G and the new 3GS will have the same software with many great improvements including MMS, landscape keyboard, spotlight search and improved calendar.
- The price. My 16Gb 3G cost (in Norway) NOK 299 (approx. $47 £28), this is very cheap, the SRP for the new 16GB 3GS is $199 (approx. NOK 1260 or £120) but knowing Norway, the price will probably be higher!
- I can live with the 2 Megapixel camera (on the 3G), this is more than good enough for fun photos while out and about. I always take my “real” 10 Megapixel camera when wanting to take good photos anyway. The new iPhone 3GS has an updated 3 Megapixel camera.
- I can live without a video camera function. My “other” camera also has a video function.
- The Compass. Yep a compass would be cool when used with Google maps, but the 3G has GPS, that is good enough for me.
- Speed & Battery Life. Yes the new version will be quicker and last longer, however I know many people who own the older 3g and they have never complained about speed or the battery!
Here is the official comparison of the older iPhone 3G and the new iPhone 3G S versions.
So, my conclusion is: Why fork out more of your hard earned cash for things you won’t miss!
Looks like I’m not the only one, check this out: http://blogmobile13.blogspot.com/2009/06/tipb-vs-tipb-why-i-am-not-upgrading-to.html

Ok, so far so good. The iPhone 3G (3.0) is impressive so far however the battery life may give me some cause for concern – maybe it’s just because I can’t stop playing with it.
